Is there an age limit for volunteers?

Anybody from 18-80 can volunteer, you need to be healthy , fit and have a passion & love for animals.

What are the periods of time for volunteering?

We prefer volunteers to be at Riverside for 4 weeks and longer, but we will accommodate you for a shorter time if that is the only time you have

available.

Where is the project situated?

Situated in lush unspoilt natural lowveld bush, near Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

Do I need any vaccinations?

You need to have a current Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Rabies; Malaria tablets are optional, but really uneccessary unless you're planning to travel to Mozambique, Botswana or other African countries.

Are there certain months for volunteering?

We need volunteers all year from January to December. There is always work and/or maintenance to be done.

Must I have previous experience working with animals?

No, you will be trained at Riverside to work with the animals under rehabilitation.

Is the centre near towns?

The nearest town is Tzaneen about 30 minutes from th project, volunteers get the opportunity to go into town at least once /twice a week for internet and shopping.

What is the best way to bring money?

There are different ATM's in Tzaneen and the local village (Letsitele) where volunteers can draw money. Travellers cheques can be used but there is normally quite a long wait at the bank.

What is the accommodation like?

Rustic style dormitories; sleeping from 3-9 volunteers. Couples can be ahoused on their own. We supply sheets, pillows, duvets and covers. Bringing a sleeping bag can be handy in winter and for sleeping in Kruger National Park. Hot water showers  and flush toilets.

Do volunteers have to prepare their own meals?

Volunteers get three meals a day; breakfast at 09h00, lunch is served at 13h00 and dinner is at 18h00. We cater for vegetarians as well.

How to get to Riverside?

Fly to Johannesburg International Airport and get a domestic flight to Phalaborwa where you will be met by someone from the project. (Contact Lynne for assistance on river-edu@mweb.co.za)

What is the cost?

Currently the cost is only 595 for 2 weeks.

What is not included in the price?

Travel costs, personal toiletries, alcoholic beverages, sodas, sweets etc. When possible volunteers can go on excursions to Kruger National Park and other places worth seeing, costs for these trips are extra, pocket money!

What is included in the price?

Return shuttle from Phalaborwa airport, 3 meals a day, accommodation.
